Emma finds a dead body outside a ball one night. Then she finds out that she is a witch. Her life is then thrown into chaos.

I loved the relationship inbetween Penelope, Gretchen, and Emma. They don't like to sit back and the things that were considered the social norms for the ladies back then. They'd rather be doing what the men are. They all aren't afraid to speak there mind and they all have different quirks about them that make them stand out. They are a force to be reckoned with, those three.

Cormac and Emma were a okay couple. I mean Cormac was trying to protect Emma and Emma just wants to be with him. There was a lot of borderline stupid, seriously just talk to each other moments. Other then that, I liked seeing that Cormac and Emma became a team even if they didn't want to. The fact that Cormac helped them out even when he was the bad guy was cool too see because even if they didn't want to admit it, they needed each other and they had each other's backs.

I enjoyed the way that the murder mystery was incorporated. The fact that Emma had to figure out her magic fast because of it made the plot interesting and entertaining, not stale. I liked that the mystery flowed with the book and Emma figuring out her past as well as her mother's.

Very intrigued to read the next one.

I initially bought this book because I had yet to read a book with my name as the main character's name. I was 14 when I read this book and I loved the themes of sisterhood, magic, the magic school, the mysterious mother figure. I found the magic system really unique and enjoyed the regency London setting. I thought the book was so refreshing to read when I did and remains one of my childhood favourites.

If you like Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger and the Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare, you should really go read this book right now because you will love it. Not as campy as the first or as historical feeling as the latter. This book was a fun read but sometimes I got lost in the many many details of the scenes. Having the three Lovegrove cousins as the focus of the book hopefully means we get to follow a different one in the next book (and from the author's website, that sounds about right). Definitely a good addition to the collection of witch books I've read this year.

3.5 stars. "A Breath of Frost" is the first book is a new series called The Lovegrove Legacy. It's the story of three cousins: Gretchen, Emma, and Penelope who discover that their family may have magic and witchcraft in their blood. The book takes place in the early 1800s in England, which is a setting I absolutely loved. This young adult fiction book has a little bit of something for a lot of different kinds of readers. I can tell you that I will definitely be on the look out for the future books in this series.

Strange things are happening to Gretchen, Emma, and Penelope in this book. They should be focused on their debutante year and their entrance into society but there are a lot of other things happening to them that are keeping them from focusing on those more fun things in life. I really liked the characters but I did wish that we got to know a little bit more about them individually. This book is very much action driven rather than character driven.

I really liked that this book was set in a historical setting. I loved all of the detail about the things that the characters witnessed and how their families live. All of the families are fairly rich so it was interesting to see how they moved in that world. The historical details made this book jump out at me!

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. There is a lot of action and it was a great opening to a new series!
