The illustrations were rich and vibrant and really brought the story to life. The personification of the narrator, La Música, may be a little confusing for young readers, but it was beautifully written and would be a nice companion to the film, Coco.

Miguel and the Grand Harmony is such a vibrant story! Not only is it the bright colors of each page that give it such a festive tone but also the way the book is written. The personification of La Musica as the narrator is done so beautifully, it feels like she flows from each page to the next. And the only time the vibrancy leaves the page is when La Musica is shooed away and goes back into a colorless nothing. La Musica works its way into Miguel's heart and becomes his great passion and he learns to follow it even in the face of obstacles.

Another thing I loved about this book was how it blended in some Spanish with the English and showed various parts of Miguel's culture and the importance he places on his family. I cannot wait to see the movie Coco when it is released this November!

Beautiful illustrations, good concept, just sooooo much text. I would have liked it more if it were half as long.

The illustrations are vibrant and engaging, but there was just too much text. I loved the idea of “la musica” guiding the little boy; I loved the idea of “la musica” being a part of the neighborhood. It felt like there were two separate stories going on here and it was all a little convoluted and confusing. Plus, the movie references went over my head because I don’t watch a lot of movies anymore and I haven’t seen this one.
