If I was younger, this would have gotten a higher rating. As it was, I'm an old gal reading a middle grade book. But it was delightful. Most of the way through the book I kept thinking "this is the only one I'll read in this series". Then the ending happened. And now I want to know what happens next. So I guess I'll keep on going...at some point.

This is a cute, fun middle grade mystery with fantastical creatures at a boarding school for evil minions. The author definitely leaves it open for a possible second book. The protagonist is definitely relatable and the mystery is not too easy to figure out.

Minions! I want 'em, whether they're the obsequious Glory minions (see Buffy, Season Five if you don't know what I mean) or the cute Despicable Me ones. Minions!

Anyway, this series is about minions and their training to work with Evil Overlords. Unlike many of these books, there aren't as many sly-adult jokes included (I always wonder if the middle grade readers get any of them) but they do take a different view of things like "Beauty and the Beast", a tragedy. I can see this being a hit in middle schools everywhere.

This is so good that it makes me rethink my hatred of the little yellow terrible minions. And my word do I hate the little yellow minions. But this-- this is JUST SUCH A GOOD MIDDLE GRADE BOOK about heroism, and found family, and friendship. Man.

Admittedly I have a weakness for found family, and school stories, so this series is made for me. But even with that put aside, this may be one of my favourite series. Funny, touching, exciting, snide, fun.

Also, illustrations!

Entertaining story of Runt Higgins, a young werewolf who keeps being put in the dorm for human minions in training instead of the werewolf dorm. He has great trouble saying "no" to anyone. He is excited though because he has been chosen for junior henchman training. Then he discovers that there are 25 people offered the training where the class is not supposed to be more than 5. So there is to be a competition for the 5 places. He is thinking that perhaps he should just withdraw, the Demarais refuses to let him volunteer to opt out. There is a new pupil, Pismo, who seems determined to make Runt's life miserable. He is continually causing him trouble and landing him in detention. Runt's best friends are Frankie25 (who is continually fiddling with his bolts and losing his head when he gets nervous or upset, Darthin who is interested in technology and such, Boris and Eloi who are orgre-humans that don't fit in with the ogres. The School is in trouble with all kinds of accidents occuring which are affecting the school's reputation. Runt is desperate to save the school and tries his hardest with his friends to alert security and Dr Critchlore to things going on, but they are continually ignored.

I LOVED Dr. Critchlore’s School for Minions and so did my 12-year-old son who is a very reluctant reader. Sheila Grau is an incredibly funny writer and she tells an exciting story about a boy trying to save his school from ruin. The book creates a wonderful world of mini monsters training to be minions for the dark overlords who rule the world, but at its heart it’s a story about a boy who just wants to fit in. Runt Higgins is a great main character, wonderfully naïve with big ambitions. His quest to find out who is trying to sabotage his school pushes him way out of his comfort zone and into some very funny and exciting situations.
