Unexpected

I thought i had this figured out. However there are a few pieces not wrapped up. Dominic bosses conversation. Did they get june. Not sure i understand the debt. The ending and kind of messy and unexplained.

overall very good story. You get bread crumbs but not enough to figure out the full story.

I wish the ending wrapped up tighter than it did. but I would recommend this as a good quick read.

Very disappointing, the red herring was very obvious and the characters were unrealistic. All of the characters tell people they barely know private and important information about themselves and the other main characters. It felt lazy and unrealistic since the intention was to make it difficult to discover who the antagonist is.

There were some problems with the writing. Sometimes the author would describe a scene one way and the change it in the next paragraph. The story also would have benefited from more description of the areas they’re in. The climax is set in a train station, and it was difficult to follow because it heavily relied on knowing what it looked like.

Interpersonal tensions, a family's dark past, and promises of revenge all come together in Phoebe Morgan's The Doll House.  Although this book has a few interesting twists, it is more of a family drama than a tense thriller.

The story is mostly divided between the stories of two sisters: Corinne and Ashley.  Of the two, I far preferred Ashley.  Ashley, a mother of three, worked hard to keep up with the demands of her family.  Dealing with a cranky baby, a curious grade schooler, and a rebellious fifteen-year-old are almost more than she can handle.  Still, when life gets tough, she's ready to meet the challenge.  I thoroughly liked this character and admired her for persevering.

On the other hand, Corinne drove me crazy.  I understand that she was dealing with a lot - infertility is no joke - but every time something challenged her, she fell to pieces.  She ran to her husband over every, small thing.  She was no more than a frightened child, and I had no respect for her.  I had hoped that she would eventually gain some moxie, but she never did.

The story itself was interesting, but events unfolded slowly.  This wasn't a quick-paced book.  The ending was exciting, but the first 80% of the book was more about family relationships and what was going on in Ashley and Corinne's lives.  That didn't make the book bad, but I was expecting a taut thriller, and this wasn't it.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and am giving it three out of five stars.

This debut is stunning. I was at 90% and I don't think I drew breath for the remaining 10%. This author has a strong point with characters and their longing - the fear of never having a child was so accurate I really felt like the character was suffering, like watching a friend go through the ordeal. Chilling in places, and intriguing, this book kept me unsettled throughout. The parts set in the past are chilling. What makes a bad person bad? Nature vs nurture is challenged once more. Great with Halloween coming up!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Doll House is a psychological thriller set in London, revolving around the lives of sister Corinne and Ashley respectively. Corinne and her boyfriend Dominic have been struggling to get pregnant for a long time, and have had multiple failed IVF attempts. Ashley is struggling to balance her life looking after her 3 children while her husband is constantly at work (or so he says). Corinne then starts receiving strange parcels that resemble parts of an old doll house the girls father made for them when they were younger. Corinne sees this as a hopeful sign that their deceased father is watching over her, and she begins to feel hopeful towards their next round of IVF. This is until items begin showing up INSIDE their flat that she becomes paranoid and concerned.

The book was pretty interesting and definitely kept me hanging. However, I just didn't really care about the characters. I also feel there was a lot of filler that didn't need to be in the book and that was simply thrown in as red herrings. These were very clearly red herrings to me and thus I just found them to be a waste of time. The book also flips between characters POV's a lot which was a bit confusing, especially towards the end when the POV switches very rapidly.

All in all the book was fun but nothing to write home about.
