I find the delivery to be dry and slow, and the content very repetitive and unoriginal.

One of the best books. I felt moved to act throughout the whole book, feeling proud of the decisions I'm making to bring my friends as a priority while having a guide into the whole thing. Truly one of my favorite.

“Out of 106 factors that influence depression, having a confidante is the most powerful. Loneliness is more fatal than a poor diet or lack of exercise, as corrosive as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. Friendship literally saves our lives.”
As a woman in her late 40s who is facing an empty nest in two short years, I was drawn to this book because I need friends. I am close to my family but I can count on one hand my close friends. I know there can be more, more to the relationships I have and also more relationships in general.
This book is chock-full of good info on the importance of friendships, and how to create them and deepen them. It is not a fast read, there are a lot of studies and examples to read through, but it is thought provoking. As an introverted extrovert I’m not one to put myself out there but I’m definitely going to take what I’ve read to heart and I’m going to start (bit by bit) putting it into action.

I’m sure the author is a nice person and probably an engaging public speaker. However, unfortunately this book doesn’t fulfil either of its main goals: efficiently disseminating science/research on the topic, and advising readers on how to develop and strengthen friendships.
The paragraphs are frequently padded with seemingly random, trite, or vague quotes, and unnecessarily long examples. on the other hand, the scientific examples given are unsatisfactory: brief, generalized, and with seemingly baseless conclusions.
Whether you’re looking for a science or psychology book about the study of friendship, or a guide to learn more about making and maintaining strong friendships, I would recommend you look elsewhere.
Two stars because there are some interesting points made.

This is an excellent example of science-translation with just on minor flaw, the obfuscated anecdotes are so vague and numerous that near the end they become hard to believe and distracting. I don't need the perfect story to illustrate each concept.
But for the most part I think this book is a great reference for not just how friends are made by how deep connection can be made in a world that crowds it out in favor of shallow, easily-dropped connections. One could use the take-aways provided to make better connections at work.
