Read aloud to my son. Written from a 5 year olds perspective which could be confusing for beginning readers but works great as a read aloud allowing for lots of guided inferencing and prediction. Also what not to do...
This one hit close to home... My son wandered away from home when he was six. The sheriff found him. He thought it was neat to see the other side.

I started reading them and now I cant stop very quick read but very good
Reread 8/2/2021: How could this be anything other than 5 stars?
10/22/2017: Listening to this on audiobook made me experience it differently. I loved these as a kid and listening to it now is giving me nostalgia! Highly recommend to elementary school kids!

I have wanted to read this series ever since my nephews were in kindergarten and raved about it. Junie B is precocious and the stories are fun.
Years ago, on a rainy night with no cable, I suggested reading a book to my daughter. The first book was Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus. We had picked up several of the Junie B books from our library to help our girl prepare for kindergarten. Halfway through the book, both she and I were laughing, had tears rolling down our faces, and were die hard fans.
The books focus on the viewpoint of Junie B, a precarious kindergartner who is learning of the world around her, developing relationships and dealing with life in general. She has friends and quasi enemies to come down the road.
In this book, it is Junie B's first day of school and she is a little nervous. She gets on the bus with no small amount of trepedation. What will happen to her at school? Will she like it? Will she hate it? (All questions my child was able to readily relate to.)
Junie B has an interesting day of highs and lows. The best part about this book is that even though things don't all go her way, Junie B tells about her first day in a way that not only let you know she got through it, but also shows she has developed a sense of humor about the lows as well as the highs.
As a mom, I frequently turn to books to help prepare my children for life. This book was a great help with my little one to get her excited to leave the nest and go explore this new world that was opening up to her. To this day, a Junie B. Jones book sighting can cause her to squeal like a 5 year old girl. She will sit on the floor of Target or Walmart and read one of these books while I am shopping. I think we can all agree that's not normal 14 year old girl behavior. She loves these books.
When she found out Barbara Park died, the girl cried. And asked to buy all the books so she can share them with her children in the future (she was concerned they would go out of print). I can't think of a better recommendation of any book series than that.

I read this book out loud to a small group of 1st graders in a book club setting. We talked about how sometimes it is ok to use language when reading a book out loud (like the word stupid), but not ok to use that language to hurt others. Students enjoyed exploring the idea of what would happen at OUR school if a student stayed behind - who would help them, how would they be feeling, etc. We also compared how the different characters are feeling and why (Junie B, her mom, the teacher, etc).
I feel like this book was written with the intention that it would be an adult reading it to a child. Many of the things Junie B talks about (especially when talking about her parents and other adults) would only make sense or be funny to an adult reader who understands what Junie B is actually referring to. I remember my younger sister reading many of these books when I was in elementary school, so it was fun to see what came up that I remembered. But I can't say that I enjoyed reading this as an adult. Maybe it was leftover annoyance at Junie B from my own childhood, but I just found it hard to enjoy laughing at/with Junie B's struggles starting school when the adults in her life ignore her and/or dismiss her fears.

I read all of these books in my first few years of elementary school and I still have a huge soft spot for them.
Junie B. Jones. Borderline inappropriate for actual kindergarteners (she's not exactly a good example) but hilarious for adults. I read this out loud to my family on a road trip and we all laughed until we cried.
Junie B. Jones Rocks!!! The first in the series. All of Park's Junie B. books are laugh out loud funny.
