Merry Christmas and oh look! There is an elf in your book! What is it doing there?

After finishing another of the There’s a/an insert critter in your book, I decided to see what else was left. And I found out there was one about an elf! Since it is almost Christmas I thought it would be perfect to read around that time. And here I am on 14 December, 11 days to go before Christmas, reading this book! Yes, by the time you are reading this it is second Christmasday in my country, but I am reading this to get even more in the mood for Christmas.

The Elf is here to see if you are nice or naughty! He has a list and he wants you to do all sorts of nice things! But, as the narrator also warns us, elves can be a bit mischievous and so be sure to not get tricked! Oh my! I was definitely curious what would be on the next page and I flipped to it eager to find out if I would be tricked or if I would do all the nice things! The tests are all very delightful and adorable and I loved doing the things the elf asked… well except from a few things because there are a few tricks and I knew right away NOT to do that. But I wonder how many kids would fall for those naughty tricks.

An elf determines whether the reader is on the Nice or Naughty list through asking a series of prompts, though the elf does try to trick the readers into being naughty. The interactive aspect makes for a fun read that will be a hit with preschoolers. However, the premise was a bit confusing (Santa is too busy?) and this would be a little long for some impatient readers.

For: elf fans; readers looking for an interactive book.

Possible red flags: mischievousness and manipulation.

My youngest nephew & niece (almost 6 and 3.5, respectively) will be sharing a copy of Tom Fletcher’s There’s A Dragon in Your Book, as we’re currently reading There’s an Elf in Your Book as our Christmas Facetime read, and they love it. I love this series too, as they’re all participatory kind of stories: Don’t get tricked into being naughty by the Christmas Elf; Help the Dragon put out the fire in this book by blowing on it, or turning the pages as quickly as you can, that kind of thing. Always on the lookout for books that keep kids entertained & engaged with whatever it is we’re reading, especially since we’re reading long distance right now, and sometimes that’s extra tough. Plus, there’s one for all occasions, which is one of my favorite things when it comes to series for kids: All the littles in my life ask if there’s “a birthday/Valentine’s Day/Halloween/Etc book’ in whichever series we happen to be reading at the time.

A nice Christmas Children's book. Look forward to reading it to my class next Christmas as it is would benefit from children response throughout.

I am extremely confused as to how everyone seems to have enjoyed this book.

The first few pages are silly as you'd expect this kind of book to be, but then it turns a little...sour.
Firstly, the premise of the book is that the elf is asking the child reading to do certain things (such as touching your nose or singing a song) in order to be a 'good child' and therefore be put on to the nice list.
This made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. This book which upon first look seems like it will just be silly and goofy fun, is now saying that if you don't play this, quite frankly strange, game of 'Simon says' you'll be put on the naughty list and won't get any presents. Honestly, if I was a child and my parents read this book to me, it would've made me very upset.
Then it gets worse. The elf then asks for the child to do something that (for some reason) is considered 'naughty' and the child is meant to be able to identify these things as being 'naughty' despite them just appearing to be something silly and fun.
Essentially the elf is deliberately trying to entrap the child. Again, this whole things seems like it could and would be very upsetting to the child reading.

Sadly, very unimpressed by this book and I don't recommend anyone reads it to a child unless you want to make that child cry. There are much better Christmas books out there.

If you want to do a new version of “Press Here” but make it feel fresh, this is the way to do it.  The Elf in the book is going to give it’s readers a “Nice test” to make sure they get a visit from santa.  This was a really fun book and would be a blast at story time.

This is a good, funny read aloud in the same way that The Book with No Pictures is a good, funny read aloud. I like books that make you say funny things but that is also cute and good natured in the end.
