My brother and sister adored the tape of this book when we were growing up I avoided it I think because I knew it was dark in places. It's a clever book and I really enjoyed the use of language and learning about rabbit habits. Overall I found it too long and a bit violent in parts. What struck me most was how male dominated it was. All of the heroes are male, in fact most of the characters including the other animals. The does were often grouped together and literally referred to as necessary only for the benefit of having kittens. Wouldnt pass the Bechdel test! Glad ive read it but certainly not an all time favourite.

I was not expecting to be so aggravated by the gender politics of a children's book about rabbits, but here we are 😂
Any rabbit that does literally anything to change the plot is any way is 100% guaranteed to be male. The female rabbits barely exist, they are props that occasionally (very occasionally) speak. Every scratch recieved by any of the male rabbits is given pages of explanation, but when a female rabbit dies, literally no one cares. So annoying. Why does this writer hate women?
And then don't get me started on all the comparisons of rabbits to "savage men", etc, so racist. Such an annoying book.

My favorite book since I was about 9 years old. I’ve read it countless times. These rabbits are my friends.

The first third is quite slow but reading on is worth it, the lives of these rabbits get rather exciting ! The characters are surprisingly well developed while remaining somewhat plausible as rabbits.
Their story is intertwined with their myths, adding another layer to their depth of character.
The fact that this story was originally created for children is mostly noticeable in the structure of the plot. Discovering the different rabbit societies was enjoyable to me as an adult but would also be an interesting way for a child to start thinking about society end community

I decided to read this because I was set to run the Hampshire Hoppit, a trail runs that starts and ends on the real place of Watership Down. It’s a good story, with strong influences from the old Greek epics. The author brings to life an imagined rabbit society and way of life that feels plausible.
