‘All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.’

No story has ever evoked such an emotional response as Watership Down. From excessively watching the 1978 film adaption to having read this novel twice it is one of the most wonderful stories of bravery and compassion I have ever read.
Despite Adams’s claim that it is solely a novel about rabbits, it has clear political and historical tones and a clear message.
The finality is certainly very bittersweet, but I’m sure I will return to this novel again and again, for Hazel, particularly, has a very special place in my heart.

DNF 20%. It wasn't horrible, but it was slow and not that much going on. I know it's old, and that some people love this. I couldn't get into it enough to stick with the slog that would have been the rest of it.

I think I was mostly annoyed by the introductory interview with the author who said he'd originally made up this story to tell his daughters as bedtime stories. Why are all the main rabbits male if this story was for his daughters? I spent the next 5-6 hours of the audiobook looking for any meaningful role for a female rabbit, then got frustrated and walked away.
