Awesome read - loved the imagery, loved the sharp observations of the world - the criticisms were fun and thoughtful, and the prose was insane. Felt fun and experimental - I never knew what was about to happen or how it was going to be conveyed - I loved the dynamic between Raoul and His Attorney, and there were moments that reminded me of Chandler’s observations if taken to a psychedelic and deeply unhinged extreme.

Vermakelijk!

Having adored the 1998 movie adaptation starring Johnny Depp, (featured on the cover art,) I was genuinely shocked at the fact that far from being an 'adaptation,' the movie is actually the closest that you could ever come to a word for word remake of the book!

So that being the case, my biggest disappointment (and the reason why I don't give it the full 5 stars) was the fact that the narrator wasn't Johnny Depp, didn't sound as if he was talking with a cigarette holder in his mouth, and worst of all, didn't even attempt to deliver the lines the same way as Depp did in the film. So as ridiculous as it sounds, I honestly regard this as a supplement to the movie. Because it's one of the only cases in which (along with "Barry Lyndon,") the film is far superior to the book.

I Just don’t think this was for me. I got the “search for the American dream”, but it honestly felt like such a small part of the plot that it didn’t really make an impact. Most of this book was about the crazy drugs they were on and their shenanigans, which was interesting on its own.

Overall, I just didn’t see much point to this book.

If I could rate this book a 100 stars, I would. If there is one word that I would use to describe this book, that would be CHAOTIC.

This was my first time experiencing Thompson's writing style. It's like a punch in the face, but with little pauses in between to allow you to breathe. There were times when I was laughing out loud while reading this book. And there were moments where he really made me question every presupposition I have of societal expectations. Then of course, there were instances that made me wonder how did this man survive and escape all the drugs and crazy antics.

If you think Oscar Wilde is descriptive with his writing, then Thompson will take you on a roller coaster ride with his description of the American Dream.

No wait! I mean, the description of that dark underbelly of the American Dream.

I would recommend this book to every human being out there. I know a lot of people have already watched the Johnny Depp movie, but read this book. You will never regret this ride of a lifetime.

P. S. Keep a highlighter with you when reading this book. There are so many enlightening and profound statements by Thompson that you would love to remember forever.

I like that he accomplishes none of his objectives.
