Fear and Loathing is a truly unique reading experience -much like a more contemporary, Americana version of Ulysses. What's it about? How much is fact, fiction and biography? Does it matter? At a stretch, Thompson's memoir (?) is about a scrambled, darkly comedic fun-house version of the United States battling a hangover from the 60's. The title makes for a great microcosm of the early 70's through the lens of an addict - wild, postmodern, unpredictable and ruinous. For readers seeking historical commentary from an unreliable, blitzed, hedonistic narrator with little direction, this is your ride.
There's much to like about the "live free or die" tone, but those seeking narrative, structure and focus should look elsewhere.

I love an unreliable narrator in a plot centered exclusively around vibes. I also love a recent history period piece. Retrospectively, this book is perfect for me which I didn’t know when I picked it up. I wish it was a little nicer to women but I can respect that the whole point was “look at these freaks doing freak things”.
