This is the first batman story with a consistent plot i read and i really liked it! It´s dark and gritty and even though i feel like the whole "who he is and how he came to be" has already been told to death this is a surprisingly interesting and new take on it. It skips right over what we already know of Batman´s motivation and goes to the beginning of him as Batman, so it´s not repetitive at all, which I had worried about when I started reading and realized it was about Batmans earlier days.
It´s not at all colorful and goofy like the single issue comics from the ´40s i read (i know Batman changed a lot since then).
I´ve seen some reviews on here saying that the dialogue was terrible and honestly, i get it, but I thought it was very fitting to the story. The inner monologues are so dramatic and emo and very much how I see Bruce Wayne, especially after The Batman (2022). They felt like diary entries and I enjoyed that.
I´m curious to see what´s next, that last plot twist had my jaw on the floor, I´m not gonna lie.

I feel like I'm reading an R Rated Batman: Year One from Miller. That's the bulk of the review.

The diary-esque sort of vibe to his thoughts, the darkness of them, it feels very Miller.

This is still a fairly early Batman, I would think. He's learning how his tech works, how his suit works, Gordon is a detective.

Bruce is having trouble fighting a serial killer who doesn't seem to have superpowers or fantastical training. But maybe he does.

It's a weird vibe, reminds me of some of those video games that came out lately based on those "creepy" musical cartoons from the Betty Boop era. (I'm going to remember the name as soon as I hit post, and be mad at myself.)
Cab Calloway. And like Bendy, or Cuphead. That's what it feels like, vibe wise. (I didn't play the games but... it just feels like how I imagine those would.)

The story is interesting enough I do want to know what happens next, which is good, but the vibe just feels like unhinged Batman which generally isn't a Batman I give too many f's about.

i’m curious to see where this story goes but from this first issue i do find the writing quite stilted and it’s commentary on class and inequality basic and surface level. the art is just stunning though so i will probably check out the next issue to first give the story another chance and additionally to see more of that incredible artwork. i also appreciate how it seems alfred and gordon will be a big focus they were the story beats i enjoyed most from this issue
