Wow that was a great short story. I loved how it talked about different kinds of Love. Love from Jake, the love from Lindsay and the love from the dad. It was a sad story too. I really hope we will see more of Lindsay. I can't wait to read book 2 now. :) Only 4 months to go until the paperback comes out!!!

Why is it that all Captain of the Football team boys are all the same? Why do they have to always want sex and use girls for it? Self-centered people who have no idea how to feel. I hate this stereotype and wish that Jake hadn't fallen into it (even though Monument #14 had already put him there).

Okay so this was of course very short. Good. And I can see why people are angry about this because Jake left for a "stupid" reason. Yes it was stupid but part of it wasn't. He states that he couldn't return because he couldn't stand being useless and seeing disappointed faces. All the faces he saw that he knew on the hospital wall pushed him near the edge again.
Him going to see Lindsey was partly because he did actually care for her. However, his thoughts about sex were pathetic and ridiculous at a time of crisis. But it still got us a sense of him and to be honest he wasn't a great guy to like in 'Monument 14' to begin with and this was certainly not written to actually like him, just to know what he was doing and what he has been thinking.
I personally didn't like it but I still see the reason it was written

A weak and uninspiring character got a chance for extra characterization that damaged him even more. The side characters we’ll likely never see again had more layers. Not recommended.

When Jake goes to look for anyone at the hospital who can help, he finds messages from people seeking loved ones. One message is from Lindsay, the girl that Jake cheated on Amber with and he decided to find out if she is still alive. He sets out on the journey to her house, not sure what he'll find or what dangers lurk on the roads.

While I found the story interesting, I really started to despise Jake a little here. We see his true motivations and how everything he does is selfish and for his own ends. He doesn't really care about Lindsay-just wants to have sex with her again to prove he hasn't gone sterile. He doesn't want to save her or bring her to safety as that might be awkward with Amber being there. And of course, priority number one is to find the drugs that he dropped. The guy is a total loser and you can see why Amber is having seconds thoughts about Dean in comparison to this idiot.

It was a good story, filling in the gap about what Jake did when he left the store and his reasons for going back to the group.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry, guys,” he told them.
He started ripping off the wires from the front of his jacket.
“I’m not . . . I’m not coming back. I can’t do it anymore.Tell Astrid I’m sorry”

In book 1, [b:Monument 14|12753231|Monument 14 (Monument 14, #1)|Emmy Laybourne|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1337779838s/12753231.jpg|17894351], the above words were the last we heard from Jake. He left the store and went out to check if the hospital was open...and then he disappeared and left everyone behind.

THIS story is the story of what happened to Jake when he was gone. Amazing! I loved it - to see it from his perspective. And to get to know him just a little bit better.

A little bit of my heart broke for him reading this, because you get to see a little more of him- but then I remember what he left behind and how he left it. And I'm not quite as sad for him, but it's still hard to be Jake....

I love this series. I need another book soon :)

If this was supposed to endear Jake to me, it didn't work.

Here we find the real reason why Jake never came back to the Greenway. He leaves to go find out if the hospital is still running, however, when he gets there, he finds a wall of missing persons and notes to loved ones. And amidst all of that, he sees a picture of a girl he used to sleep with. A 15 year old girl. He's 18. But it's okay because he brought her candy every time.

So, after seeing this picture he decides that the pressure of going back to the Greenway is too much and he's going to go find this girl because as he puts it "...if there was anyone who could get him up again, it was Lindsay Morrow. Just seeing her body in her bathing suit on the photo has almost done it for him.".

She's 15!! And your friends (and girlfriend, might I add) are trapped back in the supermarket and all you're thinking about is getting laid.

Congratulations, Jake Simonsen. You are a douche.

Not sure what this little novella was really for. Not a fan of Jake's at all.

Listen, I really love Monument 14, okay? So maybe this story made me feel even more... uneasy because of that? It just fills some hole but I didn't think it hole needed to be filled. Reader doesn't have to know everything. If this story was supposed to make me like Jake, well, it didn't work. Understand him better? Maybe. But not like.
