With a recently deceased wife and no job, Evan's life was going nowhere until a mysterious young woman named Harriet saves him from muggers. She's lived a monastic existence, training her whole life to combat a Cyclops that lives in Arizona. Like any sensible man, Evan decides to drive her there...

I'll read pretty much anything Jeff Strand writes at this point. A road trip that may or may not have a Cyclops at the end of it? Why the hell not?

Cyclops Road is one of Jeff Strand's quirkier books, like [b:Kumquat|22366313|Kumquat|Jeff Strand|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1403300671s/22366313.jpg|41776196]. Evan's at rock bottom when Harriet falls into his life. Who wouldn't want to go on a crazy hero's journey type of quest given those circumstances.

Like most of Jeff Strand's works, Cyclops Road is pretty damn hilarious. Harriet guides Evan, the unbeliever, to three other companions the prophecy dictates they find, sending them zigzagging across the country. When they finally find the Cyclops, the wheels come off the ice cream truck in dramatic fashion.

While I liked Cyclops Road, I didn't love it. It was funny but the only characters I cared about were Evan and Harriet. After such hilarious tales as Kumquat and [b:Blister|30373904|Blister|Jeff Strand|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1465397698s/30373904.jpg|50888037], it was probably a case of me setting the bar a little too high. Jeff Strand's still high on my list of favorite authors, though.

To sum things up, Cyclops Road is a hilarious tale of faith, destiny, renewal, and monster slaying. Three out of five stars.

What a fun journey! A group of unlikely heroes travel across the country on a quest to fulfill a prophecy and kill a cyclops. Hyjinks ensue, they encounter some major hurdles, but do they succeed? Is the prophecy even real? Trust me, you won't regret taking the time to find out!

This novel came out of the gates strong. Fantastic dialogue and interesting characters. Then it meandered all over the map with nothing to drive the narrative.

At one point I expected notes from Homer's "The Oddysey" but nope, just a cyclops. Nothing was explained even by the end of the book. Conflicting prophesies, a mystically locked town, a mythical beast, oh, and a protagonist who is not mentioned in the central prophesy but is pivotal to the final arbitrary victory. It's a mess.

Jeff Strand is a master at mixing humor and horror into a fantastic story. This is my third or fourth book by him and I loved every single one.

I've been trying to think of ways to describe the plot, but there's no way I can do it justice. This starts off with an emotional opening, then takes you on a wild ride. At no point could I guess where the story was going to lead me. Action packed and hilarious. The weirdest book I've read in 2016, but it's also the best. Highly recommended.

We're taking a road trip to kill a Cyclops!

I discovered Jeff Strand in July and I've been moving through his books quickly. This recommendation came straight from the author and it did not disappoint!

Most of my followers know that I typically rate books together unless I find an author I like who stands on her/his own merit. I honestly can't think of any other author that comes close to Strand's style of writing, especially in horror-comedy. He's super funny, his dialogue is tight and snappy, and he is the King of Gross-Out. Plus you never know where he's taking you. One minute you're in a car traveling along and the next minute, you're in a Fight Club ring. It's really hard to put his books down because he is a master of surprise. The entire time I reading this book, I was wondering how Strand was going to surprise us with his idea of a Cyclops. I'll leave that for readers to discover on there own, but I can attest you're in for a wild ride.

Evan is in his mid-40s and recently widowed. He comes across a woman being attacked in a park and decides to step in. It turns out Harriet is very good at defending herself and she didn't need him anyways, but there is something odd about this woman that he can't put his finger on. She tells him she is walking across country to kill a Cyclops and he gets sucked in. After all, what else is there to do? He needs a break and some distraction, so he offers her a ride.

What follows is the funniest and most entertaining road trip I've ever read. (I had to look up what a muffaletta is.) The characters in this book are all one-of-a-kind. This book is entertaining as hell, and it's full on Strand - there's something waiting for them at every bump in the road. I loved it.

I'm so glad I found this author because he has written at least 45 books, so I'll be focusing on him for the rest of this most dreadful year of 2021. (I've plowed through six of his books in the past four weeks, which isn't difficult since it's great, mindless, entertainment.)

I don't really read a lot of funny books that make me laugh, I did love Douglas Adams and reading this brought up memories of how much I adored and missed his books. I went into this believing that it was a horror story, I wouldn't classify it as that, a more accurate description would be a humorous adventure but I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to more of Strand's work. Thanks to Richard for recommending this to me, it really was delightful.
