SO INTERESTING. one of my favorite nonfictions books I've read. Only missed a 5-star rating by losing my interest at the end. Well researched, perhaps not as well written. There are parts of this book that I will take forward with me for a long time and will use to inform my life and activism. Tactility is so important and Hunter makes it clear how undervalued it tends to be in our patriarchal world. I appreciated the global span of her research. Extra points for talking about my pet interest of Mary Queen of Scots!

A fascinating book, at its best when detailing the specific rather than the general. I feel inspired to carry on my own stitching and glad to have discovered some amazing historical stitchers.

I think the subtitle of this book does it an injustice. It is more of a memoir, and as the author herself describes it, "a book about the social, emotional and political significance of sewing." It is not really a history, which is what I was looking to read.

I love the patchwork of experience and purpose that Hunter stitches together. Very informative without reading like a lecture.

Well researched and beautifully written. A superb glimpse into how women's art/crafts has been viewed over the centuries. It has inspired me to revisit embroidery.

Highly recommend

She weaves together narrative, history, craft, and so much more. I loved every page, and would recommend the book to those who love to delve deeper into the human experience, not just those who sew.
