TW: SA
This book was so pivotal in helping me understand what happened to me and that I should not feel ashamed or compare my experience to others. Each essay in this book is from such a unique perspective and the voices of the authors are not lost on the format. I adore it and would rec to anyone looking for a book about healing from SA without necessarily a medical/therapy slant

I've come to expect nothing but greatness from Roxanne Gay, and this anthology of essays is no exception. Though each write 's stories and style are uniquely individual, the collection is cohesive.
Dark and raw, these stories drip with honesty, sadness, rage, confusion, and anger. Terrifyingly, one emotion that it lacks is hope. This book is a conundrum, as the tellers are powerful and poweless.
This books has two flaws:
1. That the women who read this will too easily relate to the stories AND
2. The people who should read these stories are the least likely to pick it up. In that manner, I suppose the flaws lie not in the collection, but in society itself.

I wish this had more positive stories of overcoming. It was hard to read for me. I’m sure it’s great for others.

A raw collection of deeply personal essays that shine light on the commonplace of sexual violence in today’s world. I appreciated the diversity of people represented here and that each writer read their own story on the audiobook, making for a unique, heart-wrenching listening experience. I also appreciated that this book helps to open the discussion on sexual violence/assault so as not to shame victims but it left me feeling like ‘what now?’
