Cliffhanger is going to kill me waiting until January for the next ugh
Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Now that is how you write a sequel! I absolutely adored Defy the Night when I read it last year and have been anxiously awaiting its sequel since. Somehow, I loved this book even more than the first! I was loving this book already and then I got about half-way through and BAM, everything kicked off and I could no longer put it down. The character development in this book was so good! Tessa started to learn to think for and and value herself; Corrick started to let himself open up more and be more vulnerable; and Harristan… I can’t say much about what he was up to without major spoilers but I loved it and he has become my favourite character. I was so happy with the little hints of a possible romance between Harristan and Quint because I’ve been wildly shipping them since Defy with no hope that it would ever happen. Tessa and Corrick’s romantic development was amazing too and I am hoping that Brigid is kind enough to give them a happy ending (please, Brigid, you’ve hurt them enough). Unlike in Defy, I saw none of the twists (and there were many of them) coming but I loved every single one of them, the ending especially and that ending has left me craving more from this world! I need book 3 as soon as is humanly possible. I absolutely adore the political/royal aspects of this series as it something that fascinates me greatly, I know not everyone wants to read politics in fantasy books, but I absolutely do, give me more! I adored every single part of this book and cannot recommend it enough. It has definitely made its way on to the list of my favourites this year! As always, Brigid never fails.
What a great sequel! It answers questions and sets up more.
The political machinations continue as Corrick and Harristan do everything in their power to try and held and protect their people. With the surprise arrival from Ostriary telling about trade and moon flowers, Corrick, Harristan, and Tessa can’t look past the opportunity.
Corrick and Tessa, with rebel leader, Lochlan, and a couple guards, board the ship of Captain Rian to broker trade between the neighboring countries. But Rian and his crew are keeping this secret and instigating things, particularly with Corrick, and Tessa begins to doubt Corrick and what she thinks she knows about Kandala.
The political plots are always a highlight in this series, and this book continues that. Plus Corrick and Tessa are the perfect duo and their romance works so well, even when you’re mentally yelling at Tessa for doubting Corrick. There was introduction of some really interesting characters in this book including Rian, Gwyn, Anya, Violet and the expansion of Rocco and Lochlan. I really can’t wait for the next book after the reveals that are dropped throughout the book!

Better than the first book!
And now a cliffhanger ending??? NOOOOO! I was totally gripped and into this one. If the next one isn’t available, I’ll be very sad until it is!

Probably one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. Deception, tension, drama… absolutely amazing. Can’t wait for the next book!

After being so disappointed by the ending to the Cursebreakers trilogy, I was hesitant starting this one. I loved Defy the Night, but I also loved A Curse So Dark and Lonely, and look how that turned out. However, I was really pleased with this book! I have a few minor gripes with certain things - I didn’t really like that Fox was Harristan since that storyline feels overdone after Wes, but I loved how this book ended. Bonus points for a plot twist I didn’t see coming and a sold cliffhanger at the end!
OMG WHAT A GOOD LOVE TRIANGLE IT WAS CRAzy and THE PLOT OMG SO MANY TWISTS AND TURNS AND GOOD FORESHADOWING
veryyyyy fast paced ending while beginning was a bit boring
all throughout, everything clicked in place i really did enjoy the plot ESPECIALLY THOSE WILD TWISTS
well written emotions and character traits so that each charscters pov was noticeably unique perspective and wowwwwwwww
i am so sold from that last third of the book I WILL GET THE NEXT ASAP
only issues
some times scenes fell v flat and the changeup on tessa and rian was rushed and felt only for plot advancement
court politics was v undercooked and under thought. it felt weak and underdeveloped, only to add a plot point but not in a effective way. it coulda been wayyyy more interesting

I am becoming more cautious about reading sequels. Usually, it's just easier to read the duology/trilogy after all of the books are out since fantasy novels have a tendency to have so much detail, it's hard to remember everything. I am happy to say I did not have that problem with this book. It was very easy to get back into this world and not be confused (I'm looking at you, Curse of Blood and Stone).
This was a good follow-up, but not great. There was almost the tension of a love triangle...? Kind of? I wanted more of that. It was a lot of politics, and I wanted less of that. The pacing was slow in the middle and, like most fantasy novels lately, the action happens all at once at the end. It was basically just one long travel sequence, but on a ship instead of through the woods.
5 stars for the cliffhanger - sets it up nicely for the third book (*sigh* another sequel to wait for)
3 stars for the romance - spin the bottle/sword would have been a perfect moment for some tension
3 stars for an additional POV - I feel for Harristan but man he's whiny for a king
All that being said, the new characters were interesting, the way the story is developing is interesting enough and I'm looking forward to the next part. It was just a little slow getting there.
