Defend the Dawn
by Brigid Kemmerer
I am becoming more cautious about reading sequels. Usually, it's just easier to read the duology/trilogy after all of the books are out since fantasy novels have a tendency to have so much detail, it's hard to remember everything. I am happy to say I did not have that problem with this book. It was very easy to get back into this world and not be confused (I'm looking at you, Curse of Blood and Stone).
This was a good follow-up, but not great. There was almost the tension of a love triangle...? Kind of? I wanted more of that. It was a lot of politics, and I wanted less of that. The pacing was slow in the middle and, like most fantasy novels lately, the action happens all at once at the end. It was basically just one long travel sequence, but on a ship instead of through the woods.
5 stars for the cliffhanger - sets it up nicely for the third book (*sigh* another sequel to wait for)
3 stars for the romance - spin the bottle/sword would have been a perfect moment for some tension
3 stars for an additional POV - I feel for Harristan but man he's whiny for a king
All that being said, the new characters were interesting, the way the story is developing is interesting enough and I'm looking forward to the next part. It was just a little slow getting there.
