Damn you, Brigid Kemmerer!!! How am I supposed to LIVE until the final book on this trilogy?!? Huh?!? Can you please explain that to me??? It is ridiculous to me that I can be so invested in fictional people. In products of your very creative mind. But it’s also just SO worth it. So gratifying and captivating and awesome. I’ll wait. I won’t love it. But I’ll wait.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. If you aren’t into Brigid Kemmerer yet, GET ON IT. So good. This is the sequel to Defy The Night, and it took a minute to build but the end was insane. Tessa lives in the palace now, and Corrick is doing his thing, when a ship rolls in and the captain requests an audience with the king. Harristan ends up sending Corrick, Tessa, and Lochlan to see through a trade of steel for Moonflower. But once they are in the open seas, they discover who the captain really is, and meanwhile Harristan is discovering some backstabbing of his own. A cliffhanger sets up a third book.
I love this series so much. The world building! The characters! The complex political intrigue! Im also in a place where i want the next book in several Kemmerer series and dont know how to cope.

GUYS HELLO?! THAT CLIFFHANGER?!
Hopefully Tessa will become a baddie now that she’s separated from Corrick and Kandala . Lowkey tho, Rian had me feeling all types of ways this book 🙈 perchance a RianxBella? HEY NOW, you can’t tell me you don’t see an enemies to lovers there .
My only complaint is that sometimes the “power/influence” of some characters just felt very unbelievable and flat. Like, I’m sry but Tessa being a voice for the people just always felt funny to me bc her way of “power” was saying something along the lines of, “please don’t do this. I’m begging you.” Like, now I’m begging YOU ms girl to stand on business and think of some better lines to clock a ho!
Anyways, I still love my girl even tho she don’t really add anything to the story. Same w Corrick like, I need some more character development there. AND, I need some more action between Harriston and Quint 😤 I ain’t messing around

Better than the first book. More happens and there's interesting character development. I just don't like the writing. It's repetitive and juvenile. There's so much angst.
I’m going to be nice and give this 5 stars but it was a 5 star book, but I wanted to give it 4 stars after that cliff hanger at the end. It’s infuriating! I need to know what happens!!!
