Third read (May 2020): 5/5 stars

Look, I tried to give it four stars. Until we get into the games all I could think was "damn, Katniss really does speak like your typical dystopian YA novel main character". It was kind of cringy. Then I remember Katniss singlehandedly INVENTED the whole thing so, like, how can I blame her? Where would other dystopian main characters be without her? Nowhere that's where

I still think the best part of the book is the claustrophobic atmosphere of being trapped in a golden cage / the arena, and I still think they ruined it in the movie with all those scenes of the capitol and Haymitch and the districts that they sprinkled throughout. I hope we get to see more of that behind the scenes aspect of the games with the prequel that's coming out soon, because the movie did NOT make it justice and I want to see the mentors pulling their hair while trying to get their tributes something, anything.

Also can we talk about how masterfully done the part AFTER the games is? The movie breezed through it but it really shouldn't have. What a fucking masterpiece, thank you Suzanne Collins, even if you run to hide under a rock again a week after your new book launchs I will still stan until the end of time.

While some of this was really predictable it was really entertaining. It was an easy read, creative, thought provoking, and entertaining. Definitely one of my favorite books now. Can't wait to read the second.

it’s fun having my intense FOMO be satisfied once and for all. the relationships between the characters in this book were so well developed and i found myself craving their interactions so much. they were fleshed out so well and im happy that i have a main character i can’t help but love and also be able to criticise.

I tore through the book in three days. I thought it would be a arduous read cause I had seen the movie and basically know what is happening. But to my surprise, I find myself unable to stop reading. This was literally a "page-turner" for me.

Initially I was put off by the perspective of writing- it is written from the perspective of the protagonist. So anything that the protagonist does is actually narrated in her own words to us; for eg.
I swing my legs off the bed and slide into my
hunting boots. Supple leather that has moulded to my
feet. I pull on trousers, a shirt, tuck my long dark braid
up into a cap, and grab my forage bag

But soon enough I got used to the style of writing, and sometimes even started to enjoy it.

The real world parallels to this dystopian story is only too easy to make out. The themes of have's and have-not's, oppression, rebellion and revolution are laced through out the book making it a joy to read.

Reread around 6 years after I originally read it and it was as good as the first time
