Honestly, all I could really think about through most of the book is how a rich person's giant house with 3 stories plus a finished basement, 2.5 car garage, 2 boat boathouse, in ground heated pool and almost an acre of waterfront property was only 80k and I can't buy a livable 2 bed, 2 bath house in a non-bad area for less than 250k...
Amityville was a very quick, much lighter, direct, matter of fact read than I anticipated. I guess to maintain the verisimilitude of being 'real' (thank those grifters the Warrens for that I guess), it stays journalistically straight to the point throughout.
If you enjoyed the movies, you won't find much of their DNA here. No real father-as-possessed-villian...though there are a few recognizable and shared bits...Honestly I see more of this in 'Poltergeist' than in its own movie adaptations. Maybe even little in 'House'.

The Amityville Horror is another fantastic book to read during the Halloween season! Having loved the movies and the remake, I knew the book was calling to me so I went out and purchased it. To my surprise, I really enjoyed it even though it does TELL like a story written in the 70's (I guess I can't be too surprised as this is when it was originally wrote and published). Is the book as scary as the movie? Not really. There weren't any points when I was looking over my shoulder or shaking in fear, but it did give me that creepy crawling feeling. Perhaps I wasn't really scared because I have been desensitized by seeing the movie so much... Anyway, if your looking for a spooktacular read, give this book a try! I don't think it's available on kindle but the paperback is really cheap.

Hard to believe this is the story that shocked the nation and heralded the start of the Satanic Panic. Hindsight is an incredible gift, looking back on this the story and its details seem hokey from the very beginning. It’s much more enjoyable viewing it as a “story” instead of a true story
A surprising book that I feel was embellished but did a fantastic job of keeping me on edge. A quick read that constantly had me guessing what the house was going to do next.
2.5 stars. This book was written in an incredibly cheesy descriptive manner, and the characters act so stereotypical and predictable that it'll drive you nuts. But still, this book really scared me. Just so you know, this book's "true story" has been shown to be a hoax, so don't think it's real. Anyways, the scares of this book are usually followed by an exclamation point (Ex: There were dark scratches in her face that wouldn't fade!), and that removes some of the fear. And the family's behavior is so cheesy and fake, it reminded me of those inserts that are inserted into picture frames before you buy them. Although this was annoying, it may have contributed to the fear of it, simply because something so freaky happened to such boring, typical people. The one thing the author did very well was the build-up. The horrors came about slowly and ratcheted up the tension in a masterful way. I wouldn't recommend this book, but if you have nothing else to read, you will have an okay time with this book.

I think the draw of this book is supposed to be that it's supposedly a true story. To me, I think that's supposed to be a means to forgive some of the cartoonish haunting occurrences and lack of sensible motivations/behaviours.
It's a quick read but still drags a little. There's probably better ghost or haunting novels out there to spend your time on.
