The Amityville Horror
by Jay Anson
2.5 stars. This book was written in an incredibly cheesy descriptive manner, and the characters act so stereotypical and predictable that it'll drive you nuts. But still, this book really scared me. Just so you know, this book's "true story" has been shown to be a hoax, so don't think it's real. Anyways, the scares of this book are usually followed by an exclamation point (Ex: There were dark scratches in her face that wouldn't fade!), and that removes some of the fear. And the family's behavior is so cheesy and fake, it reminded me of those inserts that are inserted into picture frames before you buy them. Although this was annoying, it may have contributed to the fear of it, simply because something so freaky happened to such boring, typical people. The one thing the author did very well was the build-up. The horrors came about slowly and ratcheted up the tension in a masterful way. I wouldn't recommend this book, but if you have nothing else to read, you will have an okay time with this book.
