The Amityville Horror

This book contains a ton of genre cliches, but then again, it surely popularized some of those cliches, so it's hard to count that against it. It's entertaining and spooky, which is what I came for. Note: I listened on audiobook, so I avoided the reportedly terrible punctuation.

Deliciously spooky! What is it about animals standing and walking upright like humans, staring in through windows that frightens us so much? In Amityville Horror, it’s Jody the pig-demon, and his uneasy presence made me shiver more than anything else.

There aren’t any definite answers, really, about who exactly is living in the boathouse, or the sewing room, or the playroom, and that’s a little disappointing, but does make the creep factor last even after you’ve finished the story.

This was a fairly short read, but I feel it was the perfect length. There weren’t any rambling sub-plots to distract you or an excessive amount of detail.

And my favorite little spooky bit - I moved into my apartment on December 18th - the same day the Lutz’s moved into their haunted mansion.

It is hard to rate this novel as it is one of the most retold hauntings, so there were very few, if any surprises in this novel.

Creepy and terrifying and at times nauseating to think about what happened in the house... still want to go there lol

I feel the need to point out that I do not believe this is a true story. It’s a novel, a scary story, and that’s it.

I was about 8 years old when this story hit the front page of newspapers everywhere, and since then I've always lived in awe of the "horror" of Amityville. That is, until I decided to read this book. I should have left the story in childhood, because this book is just SO BAD. It's not only the writing itself that suffers, but also the story. It's beyond unbelievable that a family in the midst of constant emotional and spiritual turmoil would just continue day after day without a single real witness or without speaking out in case someone suspected demons. This was such a waste of my time, yet I read because the 8 year old in me pushed me to the end. This must have been why the Lutz's stayed for 28 days... the 8 year old in them had to see it through.

Don't read this !!!!! <-- unless you love exclamations and nonsense. I'm so disappointed in the story. I really wanted to hear an accounting of this house that sat in concert with the front page news of 1976, but alas, all I got from it was hours and hours of eye rolling. If I could go less than 1 star, I would.

I mean, 3 stars for what it presents itself
dark tense medium-paced

Not scary...definitely gets you mixed up with the change in perspectives so much...it's more like an article on events rather than a book/story/novel. I'd prefer more vivid description and emotion rather than just cataloging the happenings.

This was a good one! It was written almost like a documentary which gave it some uniqueness among most horror books. The supposed true story behind it adds to the creepiness. The pacing was a little too quick and it jumped around, mostly because of the style of writing, but definitely a horror staple. Totally recommend.
