I could see this being useful for some, but it is mostly "let go of your problems and you'll be happy".
Honestly, I was hoping it would be a narrative of someone on a self finding journey rather than self help, so I wasn't the target audience.
Sorry to say but I zoned out for the majority of the second half of this book when I realized what it was

This was interesting, but the author inserted himself too much for my taste.
I hoped for more talk about the hermit's life as a hermit, but for the most part that is limited to only a couple chapters, which is understandable since very little information is available.
It was fun to explore the life and mind of someone completely different than myself or anyone I've ever met.

Update August 17 - my original review stands with there being very little redeeming value to the bok, but even after a couple months I still look back on this book sometimes and think it was fun to read. 3.25 stars from me now
Original review:
2.5 stars
this is a fun book if you're a child of the 80s, with loads of d&d, 80s video game, movie, tv and pop culture references.
overall good, but only for a certain demographic. Entertaining, but not much more than that

A terrifying story with a positive message. There are times where the book seems to just be a listing of facts and is thus a little dry.

It seemed like the whole book was just a lead up to the last chapter. This has a somewhat interesting story, and interesting eastern teachings, but it takes too long to get to the meat. Maybe that's just the busy westerner in me....
I had high hopes for this as I loved the movie as a kid, but ultimately it's too long and needlessly complex with many parts of the story not having much to do with the overall story at all.
An interesting book. I'm very grateful to these women for the barriers they broke down.
My major criticism is that I thought, and the book insinuates, that there would be more about getting to the moon, whereas there is an abrupt dropoff after John Glenn.
I found the movie to be better, despite being less factual

5 stars because this is a book that I will constantly think about as it has changed or challenged my thinking.
A personal look at how the death penalty affects people, specifically the wrongfully convicted. This book shows that mercy may be the biggest thing we're missing in our justice system

This book is heartbreaking learning about the lives of some of the poorest children in the world and the amazing story of one boy who was rescued through adoption from one of the most unimaginable nightmares conceivable.
It is followed with an incredible journey to rediscover his past

Handcarts to Zion: The Story of a Unique Western Migration, 1856-1860
LeRoy Reuben Hafen, Leroy R. Hafen, Ann W. Hafen
This is a very thorough and exhaustive narrative of the Mormon handcart companies that walked across the plains. Although I have heard these stories my entire life, I now have a much fuller understanding and appreciation for those that participated in the handcart migration.
This book is not an easy read, but those interested in the subject will find a deeper understanding of this period of time.
