Amazing. Must read.
And I love the historical notes at the end!

Moving. The various tales of immigrants and their first generation daughters struck a chord in my heart.

Seemed like a lot of tropes. Too much left undone/unresolved (for me). I appreciate everyone’s story but it was just the surface. Great storytelling but I wanted more.

While I am an adult and could’ve stopped reading at any time, I was morbidly curious to know if this was going to get better. I don’t think it did. I read Part 1 thinking it was the setup for Part 2 but that was more of the same drunk and drug addled ranting. I thought I saw a ray of light in chapter 13 but no, just more drugs. This was a quasi coherent fever dream that happened to be put on paper. Maybe cause I don’t take drugs?? this whole book was lost on me. I SUFFERED.
But, I can say it’s done.

A bit disappointed in the ending. Also, I was expecting it to be more sordid than it was. Did not like the pages that went on and on without dialogue.

The first time I read this, I was stunned women could “act that way”.

It was inspiring.

The writing is dramatic but the story is not. I was swept up in the setting more than the plot. In one chapter, she described the sky as “blue velvet” and it took my breath away. It picked up the last 4 chapters then ended kind of anticlimactically. But based on her vivid descriptions of the countryside, I would love to visit Sardinia one day!
