The main issue with is book is that we have a middle age white man, mansplaning to us what we should and shouldn’t listen. Essentially for Reynolds everything produced after the ninety’s is not good enough, because it lacks of the same spirit that music used to have in the 60s,70s and 80s. I do agree with the fact that the music industry and the art industry of today is more focalised on the selling bit, rather than the making bit. Its all about the money, which fair enough that’s true in a way, but that’s not the art industry or the music industry fault per se. We live in a capitalist society where EVERYTHING is about money, who can sell out more and fast enough. The two industries, art and music, just adapted to this new concept. That doesn’t make it necessarily ok, but it was either adaptation or being left behind.
I’m a huge fan of historical fiction, and mixing it with greek gods? Absolutely fantastic. I loved the multiple povs, I loved James, hazel and their friends. It’s a really nice story, tho I feel some staff could have been easily taken out, the book is heartwarming and you get so invested into the story of this 4 young people affected by the tragedy of the war. Definitely recommend
I love the movie, but I didn’t necessarily like the book. Knox, that in the movie is already problematic, in the book is even worse… Like, how?¿ Why do authors feel the need to include this type of storylines? They really add nothing to the plot aside from trauma to the characters.. overall I feel the movie has a better structure, considering the fact that the book has some missing scenes as well.
I really couldn’t get into the book. I felt an outsider, which is something that rarely happens when I’m reading. Theo’s storyline is sad, but throughout the book he has no personal development or whatever. He gets swan from a young age by drugs and alcohol and crimes, and that’s pretty much what happens from then on. The characterisation of women is utterly ridiculous, misogyny over misogyny. Boris from all was my least favourite character, he enraged me every time he opened his mouth. I feel the book had an interesting storyline, it could have been developed in something amazing, but, the ableism, racist and sexist quotations stops this book from being good. At the end the book results flat, most parts could have easily being left out, and with no development.

I found the book really relaxing, but the whole structure per se feels like a fanfiction. It was fun to read, I enjoyed, but I don’t feel giving it more than 3 stars.

It’s been so long since I have read such a good book. Reading about Devon and Chi story, and everything they went through is truly heartbreaking, and unfortunately, still a sad reality in many parts of the world today. It was lovely to see the character development, especially in Chi, and I do have admit I was not expecting what happened at the end!
