This review is left after a re-read. I must have had a different perspective when I first read this 10+ years ago. I now found their relationship highly toxic bordering on abusive. They are both overly possessive and relish in creating a bit of pain for pleasure. I'll be interested to see how the other books change since I am older.

Much like When Women Were Dragons this book centers on the premise of a mother transforming and the children left behind in her absence. An unamed teen is left to cate for her young brother and run the family after her father dies and her mother grows more distant. I'm glad this was a novella rather than a full-length novel as the themes and issues were vary similar. I did, however,nlove her subtle jabs at climate change and unchecked capitalism and their affects on the world. Brilliant.

This book was absolutely sublime. I fell in love with the writing from the very first page. This story is at once heart-breaking and uplifting in a way the defies belief. I found myself rooting for everyone to find some shred of happiness in whatever form that would take for them. Just stunning.
