When I bought the book I didn't realize I'd picked up the last one in the series. Given that I thought it was a pretty good stand alone book, though. I had considered going back and reading the other ones just to fill in the blanks, but I'm not 100% sure. The characters seem a bit juvenile for my taste but the writing was fairly solid. Not bad for a quick read over the long weekend.
This book was gripping from start to finish. I loved the way the author parallels Charlie St. Clair's story with Evelyn Gardiner's story and manages to span the horrors of both world wars. The plot was fast paced and kept moving forward. The chapters alternate between the POV of Charlie and Eve so it's a cyclical trap of, after finishing one chapter, trying to get through the next one to find out what happens only to get caught up in *that* story and start the process over again. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of WWI or WWII drama, espionage, strong female leads.
I didn't quite like this book as much as I liked "Fall of Giants". Daisy's transformation from beginning to end seemed somewhat plausible but in retrospect a little far fetched. That being said, I have never been through the kind of trauma and horrific lifestyle that she was subjected to during the war so I can't see with 100% honesty if that was realistic or not. Regardless, still a great book in the series, I just preferred the first one a bit better.
