Aubrey Choi has had a. frantic morning- the monstrous cake for a 6 year old's birthday party is given to the wrong person and she has to deliver a new one within 3 hours. Landon Kim is enjoying his chocolate bundt cake when he chokes on a gummy worm. When Landon's scathing review does real damage to Aubrey's bakery, he attempts to make it right by inviting her to be a guest chef on a show that he is producing.
I really enjoyed this. The set up could have turned into a romantic comedy. Or even one that fell into the overly dramatic trope. Instead it turns into a relationship with adults who act like adults and all of the complicated obstacles and baggage that they have to deal with. It's not messy, but things do happen rather quickly. In the end, it's the characters that made this book. Lee did a great job of writing her characters into life. This was a decadent dessert with molten levels of attraction. It turns out that this is the first book-I'm looking forward to the next one.

I listened to this as an audiobook via Hoopla. Initially, I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this. This was more about black trauma and less about the magic- which is what I wanted. But, Onyebuchi did a good job of pulling me into the story. I am not bothered that the magic is fueled by anger or that it was violent. Of course, because this is a novella, my other complaint is that I wish that it was just a little bit longer. I am just as interested in the magic as I am with the characters. But it's lacking on the magical details.

I picked this up because it was one of my recommendations from The Storygraph. I want to know how accurate this feature is.
Did The StoryGraph get it right? Yes! They very much did. This is a contemporary romance. I could go on about the characters (which I loved) or the romances (!!)-full of sexy times and matches that absolutely worked. But to be completely honestly the main reason that I loved this book was because it was so funny. The pranks, the banter... The accidents , mishaps and awkward situations. They were all hilarious and had me laughing hysterically. Out loud. My kids thought that something was wrong with me. It definitely made me invested in the story and love the characters more. To be honest, I am not sure if I am brave enough to be friends with Henley or Kasha. But, I definitely wouldn't want them as enemies.
What is even better is that the book is balanced with warm heart moments, healing conversations and bridges being made to mend relationships. There was an unexpected depth to be found in between the hilarious moments. I can't wait to check out the next recommendation.
