This wasn’t what I thought it was  … I appreciate it for what it is and believe it’s necessary for books like this to exist- written the way that it is, but

I have books 2 and 3 for review, so I decided to pick this one up from my library. I am a huge Marvel fan, so I just knew that I was going to love this one. I did like it. It is definitely something that I would have loved and raved about -if I had read this when I was the age that this was meant for. I am glad that they chose to focus on the lesser known superheroes for their series.
This is your typical "get to know yourself and your team" story. It was fun watching the team come together, and I enjoyed watching Kamala step up as leader. How they all missed the villains in training though is beyond me. This is definitely something I think my kids would enjoy.

This was our bookclub's first pick of the year. And it was an enjoyable read - but honestly most books are when you are reading them with someone. Gabriel de Leon is a horrible storyteller- sometimes jumping back and forth works. And it did in this situation with the added bonus of annoying me.I had question and he would dance right up to the answer and then switch to something else. So, I'm saying that he's a bad storyteller. There was something that I had guessed at 25% into the book, but it took getting to the 90% mark before he addressed it. I still had question after finishing this book, so moving on....
Except for end, where I had to accept Gabriel's unwillingness to answer my question, I enjoyed this book. I was invested in what was happening /going to happen to Gabriel and "the cup". He started out so strong, with so much faith and potential. I wanted to -no I needed to -know how he ended up in a tower telling his story. My first thought was that it was a a set up and something bigger was happening. And that's still a possibility. But I also don't trust Kristoff to write the likeliest thing to happen.
Empire of the Vampire had a bit of everything that you could want in a good story. There were moments of laughter, love and danger. It played on and with your emotions. Gabriel was even able to bring his vampire interviewer to tears. Friends die. Friends come to the rescue. Friends disappoint. There's a prophecy to unravel and fulfill. There's a blood mystery and the Vampires!! No I will not say that Kristoff is bringing vampires back - they never left. But what he is doing? Well that's quite interesting. I am definitely left needing book 2 ASAP!

I'm always on the lookout for graphic novels that my kids may one day enjoy. And I saw this one at the bookstore but decided to wait and check it out from my library. While I don't know if it has staying powers - there a lot of mythical graphic novels out there, and I am sure more will be available - especially against the traditional superhero comics, I definitely enjoyed this one. I am hoping that we are given more than just this story and that each character's story continues as they learn to harness their power and fight the baddies. With this, three different stories and three different pantheons are explored. Japan with Raijin vs. Fuijin, Egypt with Horace vs. Seth and Berlin with Freya vs. Loki. This is funny and hopeful even though the battle isn't over. Each character reacts differently to inheriting powers. I really liked that the success for the heroes didn't come easy and nor was it guaranteed. The way that this ended left me to believe that more would be coming, and I can't wait to see what happens.

Maybe it's to show something that's unspoken or off the page, but it reads more thoughtless or stereotyping to me. For example, Lilt is called a tomboy by Mehret, one of the mean girls at school. Lielet says it's because Mehret has developed boobs. But in a later scene we see Lielet with her brother. They are drawn so similarly that it's hard to tell them apart. The story itself was just okay . I think I would have appreciated it a bit more if the myth of Kerit was actually told. I know that she is supposed to be scary, but she came across more as annoying.
