This is Brown's sophomore novel, and this one is stronger than the first one. It's about so much more than a girl learning how to swim. It's about facing your fears. No better way to work through your fears the confronting your great aunt's ghost. The historical truth about black people and swimming are nicely woven into the story. The tension is perfectly taut - you're really not sure if the ghost is just playing to out to do real harm. I love the fact that Celeste finds her voice, stands up for herself and figures everything out. This is a great children's ghost story. This is perfect for young readers who are interested in horror or who are just beginning in the genre.

This is a middle grade  book about climate change. I actually accepted this for review, because I thought that this may be a good way to talk about climate change and global warming in school. And it kind of is, but it was also a little too weird and too slow paced for me. Things were happening, but they did't always make sense. The story would jump from character to character, but I was never sure if it was written from the character's perspective or from an outsider's perspective.  All in all this just didn't work for me.

This is a novella in the Mystic Bayou series, it focuses on a. new arrival and Rob. The story doesn't really add much to the overall series, in regards to the issues with the rift. But it adds so much to the vibes of the series and gives depth to the characters. Especially, the side characters. It was funny, and sweet. I am not the biggest fan of the miscommunication trope, but Harper has a way of making it fun in this series. And it's even funnier here (or at the least the first time in this one.) The second time was a little heartbreaking because I found myself rooting for Rob and thought that things were going so well. Of course, it ends on a high note and I hope to see more of this couple in the coming stories.  If you. haven't started this series, I definitely recommend it. It is so much fun.

Oh man. This was a hard one to DNF. It was a book that I had been looking forward to for so long. And it is one of those cases that I wish that I had picked it up immediately when I was approved for, because maybe I would have been a little more lenient with it. Meaning, I may have had the patience to finish this. This truly is a case of there’s nothing wrong with this book, it’s just me. The writing, while beautiful and vivid, was just not for me. The writing made the pacing feel slow for me. And right now I just want the action, I want battles or something more than what this book is offering  Had I read it earlier, I may have stuck it out and at least finished it. But, honestly, I don’t think this would have been a book that would have made it to my favorites list. The idea of the story fascinates me and my friend Arlene’s description of it makes me want to like it, but not right now. Is there a chance that I will circle back and try this one again? Absolutely because I really REALLY want to like it.

I heard about this before it was published and decided to listen to it as soon as it was available. This audiobook does two things at the same time; it explored the disappearance of Tamika Huston while also exploring why black women go missing all of the time but seldom get the coverage that white women get. It does a good job of walking through Tamika's case, showing her life and the people who she touched and showing how the case was solved.  It also did a good job of highlighting the issues with the coverage of missing black women. But it doesn't offer solutions. It doesn't really explore the specifics of media. It blatantly accuse media of caring more about missing white women than missing black women (true) but it never asks the question of why doesn't black media cover black missing women (they don't). All in all this was a compelling listen, even if it was hard at times.

Erika Alexander did a great job narrating and telling Tamika's story.  I would recommend this audiobook.
