introvertinterrupted's Reviews (1.08k)

This was such a good read. I usually have problems with narratives that depict "gifted" individuals due to the author's usual constant emphasis on making the characters' "gifts" and "differences" known by having the characters rattle off random facts/tidbits/observations about others, but Sloan did an amazing job of making me actually care about twelve year old Willow's point of view. I was seriously rooting for this character and the ragtag group of random people who look out for her after her (adopted) parents die in an accident. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a read with a bunch of feels and funny dialogue.

If I were to be honest I'd have to say, I didn't really enjoy this graphic novel. I know this is probably a blasphemous review, but this is definitely not my favorite graphic novel. The graphics are too messy and the characters are not to my liking at all. I didn't connect well with the father who seemed a tad sexist and over bearing or the son who seemed like he was just using his dad for his history and the promise of a good story to sell. I felt bad for the women in this book they all seemed to have hard times in life. Overall, I'd prefer to read other books about the Holocaust than this series.

Not really what I was expecting however, it was an extremely quick read. The humor was dry, but the drawings were cute. If you're a cat lover or animal lover of any kind, I suggest this picture book.
