The story is heavy but compelling, with dreamy artwork that reminds me of Dave McKean's work in Arkham Asylum. For a character that so often deals with superheroes and gods, it's refreshing to have a strong story based in the real world where Batman can really excel.

Hard-hitting Batman story with beautiful art. I personally like comics that handle more grounded real world issues, and this delivers. This is so far the only Batman comic that's given me nightmares. HUGE TW for child abuse and CSA

In this bitter tale, Batman does his job and finds the culprit, but also eliminates the only true saviour of innocent children; a role we later see he can't take on as he lacks the natural ability to attune himself to it, unlike the doctor. The grim limitations of his figure are then highlighted, reminding us of who he really is and how set apart from the usual heroes he stands: darkness cloaked in violence with an outlet in crime.
Oh and the art style is gorgeous oh my god.

I really enjoyed the art, it definitely helped sell the mood of the whole story. But the plot felt too short for me, I would've liked a little more time with the antagonist. The synopsis didn't help either, I thought we were going to see Bruce hiding from the police more, trying desperately to clear his name, but he had one conversation with Gordon and everything was fine.

I understand how Gordon's relationship with his kid and him breaking the cycle of abuse contributes to the story of abused children, but I personally could've gone without it.
