brutal, cerebral, visceral, intense—this epistolary text defies categorization as a love letter, a suicide note and a political act altogether.

I want to share this book with everybody dear to me, but at the same time I want to keep it for myself.

Never have I come across a protagonist who lays out her feelings for another like this. It's raw and emotionally devastating, and knowing Qiu Miaojin's background only makes the writing more intense. I didn't like it as much as Notes of a Crocodile without all the social criticism, but it strikes a different chord with how brutally honest the writing is about the protagonist's love and obsession for her ex-girlfriend. It really feels disturbingly like reading the author's thoughts leading up to her suicide.

This book is not structured like any other. There is no plot, no goal. It's the narrator's love which, through letters they write to their lovers, weaves the book together. The content, and all the raw emotions expressed in it, can be difficult to handle and face. It's challenging, but incredibly touching. A classic in Taiwanese literature.
