It was all going so well...interesting, sad, funny, a touch of magic, escalating plot, surprise reveals...and then it was over. Oh wait, this is the first in a trilogy. sigh

Points for originality, clever dialogue  and enjoyable writing. In the end, I wanted more conclusion.

I read this in two sitting so I guess I liked it? but also I thought the teenage dialogue was cringey and unrealistic, I HATED the super specific song references (like a G6? kill me). also the phrase “wackadoodle”?! come on, did my 60-year-old mom write this?

Son of a Trickster took me for a bit of a wild ride. What I observed as I got to know the main character was just how many opportunities this kid had to turn bad. Whether from parents who were struggling on their own, from bullying at school, or from constant substance use, Jared was dealt a tough hand. But the inherent goodness in him shone through and this just showed to me the natural born strength some people have to carry them through tough circumstances. This made him admirable and made me root for him.

i really liked jared, he was a really wonderful character and i got teared up near the end during the AA meeting part, however i really struggled to get into this book. it wasnt very plot driven, i feel like it ended at the halfway mark of a much longer book and it was just very explicit for my taste in reading :/ its just not my kind of book

It was kind of hard for me to get through the first half, but best believe I was enraptured when things started to kick up. I really started to understand why this book was so lauded after the first 50%. Not to say that the first half of the book was bad, just that I felt a kind of disconnect from what was happening and what the summary led me to expect.

I've been meaning to read this book for a while and I'm so glad I finally did! Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. What an amazing story. It's so many things all at once. You just feel for Jared and this crappy life he's living and trying to make the best of. I just want to hug him and give him a stable place to call home. All of the characters are great and well-rounded, even the ones you don't really like. I can't wait to read more of this series.

This was a really great book that took some unexpected turns. It was well-written and the characters were strongly developed and balanced. The conclusion left me a bit adrift but not in a bad way. I think this is a unique, Canadian novel and I highly recommend it.
