I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it is so heartwarming and made me feel so many different emotions throughout.

Super quirky. Liked it.

An interesting yet poignant concept- people hired to help with assisted suicide.
Darkly comic and quaintly sweet from the off, this tells the story of pensioners getting caught up with a murder plot which brings them out of their depth but lets them have a buzz of life in their twilight years. Belinda Bauer writes in a way similar to Douglas Adams; it feels like she’s in the room having a conversation with you. The character of Felix is sympathetic and nuanced but the other characters who appear come across as little more than surface deep. The ending of the novel is heartwarming and leaves all the different leads tied together nicely.

God, this book was such a delight to read. I’ve never read anything like this - We meet Felix, a 75 years old man who was an Exiteer, whose job is to comfort terminally ill people, who have chosen to die to end their suffering, during their final moments. During his latest mission, Felix was partnered with a new, young Exiteer named Amanda who was really nervous during the task and accidentally did something that might jeorpadize their position in the eyes of the law. After the mission was completed, something went very wrong and Felix found himself caught in a bizarre murder investigation.

“It’s a hard thing to live long enough to know all the hurt you done.”

Exit by Belinda Bauer delivers all the right ingredients - it is funny, intricate, heartwarming, suspense and mysterious all at once. The characterization, mainly of Felix, was very wonderful and I absolutely adore the unexpected friendships that he has made throughout the book. Since the story revolves around elderly characters, Exit is also a poignant and tender rumination on death, regret, forgiveness and loneliness. The plot was very solid and it does get a little pacey with all the subplots and side characters but everything will make sense at the end of the day.

As with any mystery, things are rarely ever as they seem. There were so many twists and turns that were just “perfect”, in the sense that they were entirely believable and not exaggerated. I also would like you to know that I failed to guess any of the mystery in the book - which was very impressive and obviously very brilliant. Overall, Exit is a delightful and heartwarming mystery novel with a solid constructed plot and I really could visualize it as a movie. I highly recommend this book that is part mystery, part wisdom and large part a terrific read.

Thank you Times Reads for the review copy in exchange of an honest review

This was a crime book but it was funny! It’s about a man whose job is to keep people company as they take their final breaths. It just didn’t turn out that way with one man and it became a crime!
This was the first book I had read by this author but have others on my list

Having recently read “Snap” and “The Beautiful Dead” and both being five star reads for me, I knew I’d be thoroughly entertained with Belinda Bauer’s latest novel “EXIT”.

  • IT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE MURDER ...Pensioner Felix Pink is about to find out that it’s never too late, for life to go horribly wrong. When Felix lets himself in to number three Black Lane, he’s there to perform an act of kindness and charity - to keep a dying man company as he takes his final breath but just fifteen minutes later, Felix is on the run from the police after making the biggest mistake of his life.

Seventy five year old Felix is an ‘Exiteer’, someone who sits with a terminally ill person wishing to end their own life and suffering. By staying the right side of the law, an Exiteer cannot assist with the actual process of dying but can give assurance to the person’s family, that they weren’t alone when they passed. However, when Felix and his Exiteer colleague make a life changing mistake, his world is turned upside down in minutes. At seventy five years old, Felix is a bit of an antihero, lacking the traditional qualities of a hero but wanting justice all the same and has a deep moral conscience. Still grieving the loss of his wife Margaret and son Jamie, his only companion is his loveable dog Mabel and oddball neighbour Miss Knot.
Along with some really cracking characters like the farcical PC Calvin Bridge, DCI Kirsty King and their vending machine capers, a fight with garden gnomes and some tree climbing antics, there’s some lovely dark comedic moments that softens the bleakness of the subject of euthanasia. I enjoyed the unique plot immensely, this very talented author has created a fabulous crime thriller that’s weaved with some superb British humour and is a book I shall be keeping to re-read again for definite in the future.

#EXIT - 5 stars
