Exit by Belinda Bauer
4.0

God, this book was such a delight to read. I’ve never read anything like this - We meet Felix, a 75 years old man who was an Exiteer, whose job is to comfort terminally ill people, who have chosen to die to end their suffering, during their final moments. During his latest mission, Felix was partnered with a new, young Exiteer named Amanda who was really nervous during the task and accidentally did something that might jeorpadize their position in the eyes of the law. After the mission was completed, something went very wrong and Felix found himself caught in a bizarre murder investigation.

“It’s a hard thing to live long enough to know all the hurt you done.”

Exit by Belinda Bauer delivers all the right ingredients - it is funny, intricate, heartwarming, suspense and mysterious all at once. The characterization, mainly of Felix, was very wonderful and I absolutely adore the unexpected friendships that he has made throughout the book. Since the story revolves around elderly characters, Exit is also a poignant and tender rumination on death, regret, forgiveness and loneliness. The plot was very solid and it does get a little pacey with all the subplots and side characters but everything will make sense at the end of the day.

As with any mystery, things are rarely ever as they seem. There were so many twists and turns that were just “perfect”, in the sense that they were entirely believable and not exaggerated. I also would like you to know that I failed to guess any of the mystery in the book - which was very impressive and obviously very brilliant. Overall, Exit is a delightful and heartwarming mystery novel with a solid constructed plot and I really could visualize it as a movie. I highly recommend this book that is part mystery, part wisdom and large part a terrific read.
