This Hazardous Tales made me laugh a lot. I love seeing how the places and monuments I've visited in southwest America got discovered. As always, a perfect blend of humor, perspective, and really thorough history.

Hale also upped his coloring game! There were skin tones and hair colors, which were really cool to see.

TW: blood, murder, death, war

Appropriate for intended demographic (7-8 grade); no historical white-washing, which is a pleasant surprise. Accessible and educational.

Always a winner with Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales!!
I learned quite a bit about a subject I had never heard of. I haven't put a ton of thought into how places are mapped and explored so I really enjoyed reading about Powell's journey down the Colorado River. I have a life long goal of white water rafting and my interest was piqued even more after reading this.
The backstory about Walter Powell was heartbreaking as well as the conclusion of the brothers and Dunn who departed the party.
I loved how Hale added and illustrated the letter from the other guy (can't remember his name) who also voyaged down the Colorado.
My son, who is as avid a Hale reader as myself, found the flashbacks confusing. I told him to give this one another try in a few months. It's definitely worth a read!

(3.5 stars) I am a huge fan of graphic novels and of Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales. That said, this was not my favorite book in the series.

Major Impossible is the story of John Wesley Powell, a Union soldier who lost his arm in the Civil War. Despite this setback, he found in the war until it was over and then embarked on an expedition to explore the Colorado River. Over the course of the three-month adventure, the explorers faced many challenges and trials. In the end, only six of the ten explorers made the entire journey.

This was the story of someone I knew very little about in history, and I did enjoy learning about his life. The constant flashbacks to earlier years were helpful to provide more biographical information but they interrupted the flow of the exploration adventure. It made it a bit more difficult for me to follow the story.

In the end, this title definitely brings to life a lesser know subject in American History and I enjoyed learning more about him. This is not the Nathan Hale book I would encourage readers to begin with.

This is my first NHHT book, my 9yo recommended it to me. I love the "1,001 nights" structure which I guess all the books share. Very funny and informative.

This was a good graphic novel about the exploration of the John Wesley Powell expedition of 1869. I wasn’t that familiar with JWP other than Lake Powell being named after him.

I’ve been reading this series with my son and it has been the most fun. We’ve both learned so much. They’re quick reads. We usually finish in 1-2 days. It’s such a great intro to history for kids. We can’t wait to keep reading the next book in the series!
