I can't believe that I waited a year after finishing the first book to read this one. I absolutely love this series so freaking much. The characters are compelling, and the plot has a way of building up until a completely explosive and intense finally. Seriously, I don't know how Kelly Meding does it. There were so many twists and turns in this book that I still feel as if I'm left reeling from some of the revelations. That being said, I cannot wait to jump into the next book...so I don't think I will. I am starting Tempest right now.

Moving forward in the MetaWars series, Changeling was both a thrilling addition to a world I had grown to like and a sharp departure from the course set by Trance, the first book in this series.

Told from the viewpoint of Dahlia Perkins, the newest member of the Meta team, it vividly portrayed the challenges of both a world in social upheaval over the resurgence of the Metas and the inner-dynamic of divergent personalities attempting to come together as a unit. The world-building in this volume was on point however the direction in which the story veered lost me somewhat. This could easily be due to the fact that I am enamored of relationship building between characters and the relationships in this book are complicated at best and often strained. That said, I found the situations believable and the reactions understandable, if not ideal. Then again how many of us have ideal reactions to events we don’t like?

Still, the trust central to having a tight-knit group was frayed by the end of this book, making me leery of where the future journey will take me.

This is not your typical paranormal romance/urban fantasy. This book is not for you, if you are going for the girl-meets-boy, girl-and-boy-get-insatiably-hot-for-each-other, girl-and-boy-have-some-heart-rending-complication, girl-and-boy-resolve-everything-with-the-hottest-sex-ever, oh-and-also-there's-a-bit-of-adventure-thrown-in. If I hadn't been wondering "when they heck are they getting together" for most of the book, I think I would have enjoyed the overall experience more. So know going in that there is *no sex* in this book (unusual for a Pocket After Dark book).

This story is more complex than traditional urban fantasy and paranormal romance, with a truly fascinating ending. I can't stop thinking about the story, despite a few shortcomings -- like the superhero names (silly) and how they're used interchangeably with the real names (confusing).

I did *not* read the first book in this series, because I didn't realize there was one before I started reading Changeling. There are references to the first book in this second one, so I'd recommend looking for "Trance" and starting at the beginning. :)

Right up until the ending I was loving this book. But the end was a total downer.

This time the story is from the point of view of Ember/Dahlia. She's the one that controls fire. At first things are going smoothly. The Metas have moved into their new digs, but as they're working they realize they need an electrician and that's the pivotal moment that changes everything.
