Lovely. I lost myself in these poems, beautiful little sonnets filled with memories.

Through poetry we learn about the childhood Nelson had growing up in the 1950s and 60s. She expertly wove history with childhood fact. A short, powerful read.

This was a simple memoir-in-verse about one young woman's self discovery while growing up in a deeply troubled time. Beginning with the distant observations of a child and growing into encounters close up, Nelson experienced the hazards of being different from the "accepted standard." Yet she rose to become a successful adult woman. The most profound thing about this book to me was that it easily could have been written by a young American minority today; it provided a reminder that times do change, but not that much, and that people truly can overcome the trials that are thrown their way.

Excellent memoir in verse - Coretta Scott King Award. Cold War, desegregation - would be a perfect companion to Brown Girl Dreaming, Countdown or Revolution.....among many others.

A moving memoir told in free verse poems. The glimpses of Marilyn’s childhood traveling as her father’s Air Force orders took them to live at various bases (including Oklahoma!) and experience life during the 1950s. The last two poems were my favorite.
