How I Discovered Poetry by Marilyn Nelson

3.0

This was a simple memoir-in-verse about one young woman's self discovery while growing up in a deeply troubled time. Beginning with the distant observations of a child and growing into encounters close up, Nelson experienced the hazards of being different from the "accepted standard." Yet she rose to become a successful adult woman. The most profound thing about this book to me was that it easily could have been written by a young American minority today; it provided a reminder that times do change, but not that much, and that people truly can overcome the trials that are thrown their way.
