"So many of us have become afraid and angry. We've become so fearful and vengeful that we've thrown away children, discarded the disabled and sanctioned the imprisonment of the sick and the weak - not because they are a threat to public safety or beyond rehabilitation but because we think it makes us seem tough and less broken. In fact, there is a strength, a power even in understanding brokenness, because embracing our brokenness creates a need and desire for mercy, and perhaps a corresponding need to show mercy. When you experience mercy, you learn things that are hard to learn otherwise. You begin to recognize the humanity that resides in each of us."
Read this book, now more than ever......

Attorney Bryan Stevenson and his non-profit organization, the Equal Justice Initiative, have helped hundreds of unjustly incarcerated Americans receive a measure the long delayed justice they deserved. This book compassionately tells the story of some of these people, many of whom were imprisoned, and sentenced to die, for crimes they could not possibly have committed. Others were sentenced to live their entire lives and die in prison for bad choices they made as children. Stevenson and those who work with him have helped bring hope, justice and mercy to many who thought it would never come. Some of the stories in this book brought tears to my eyes as it opened them to lives completely unlike my own, and yet just as just as deserving of basic human hope and justice. Before reading this book, I knew little about the justice and prison systems, and the prejudices and injustices often experienced by those who are marginalized in society due to race, ethnicity, disability and poverty. I would highly recommend this very readable book for every one who is open to seeing what too many in this nation sadly experience. It is a life-changing book that will stay with me for a long, long time.

No rating. This book took me six months to finish. It was excellent but hard to read because the details were too discouraging for bedtime reading. I think the book was really well done, but I did not particularly enjoy getting through it. Fascinating, and horrifying, however.

It would be hard to read this book and still believe that the death penalty is right.
