My heart and mind struggled through so much of this book. There are very few books that truly have a lasting impact on my soul. This is one of them! I do not use the term “must read” but in this case I will!! This is absolutely a MUST READ.

No matter your opinion about our legal system and individual rights, this sheds light on things we would like to ignore or disregard. If you are a human, this will give you a perspective that is critical understanding the intricacies of a reality that many of us have never experienced. A book is never a replacement of reality. But this book provides you a glimpse of the emotions and frustration that can be felt in the most desperate situations.
Warning: reading this will make you want to do something to make a difference!

Accessible for someone who doesn’t know the intricacies of law, might be confusing for a non-American. A really important exploration of the death penalty and the legal system in the US.

How sad and eye opening. This book completely changed my views on so many issues that I simply hadn't bothered to do the research on before. Definitely worth a read.

This was such a hard book to read. It made me equal parts angry and sick, reading about so much injustice and knowing these stories are just a drop in the bucket. We have got a lot of work to do.

Holy hell, everyone needs to read this. That is my professional opinion. Thank you. That is all, now here are some of my favorite quotes :

"We are all broken by something. We have all hurt someone and have been hurt. We all share the condition of brokenness even if our brokenness is not equivalent."

"The power of just mercy is that it belongs to the undeserving. It’s when mercy is least expected that it’s most potent—strong enough to break the cycle of victimization and victimhood, retribution and suffering. It has the power to heal the psychic harm and injuries that lead to aggression and violence, abuse of power, mass incarceration."

"Constantly being suspected, accused, watched, doubted, distrusted, presumed guilty, and even feared is a burden borne by people of color that can’t be understood or confronted without a deeper conversation about our history of racial injustice."
