Well it's for sure not my normal choice for a book to read but it wasn't awful. There was action although I had times where I was not entirely certain who the main character of the book was. There was even some parts that I found to be funny and found myself reading them out loud to my husband to see if he also found them funny.

Coonts doesn't cease to capture my attention. Some might complain about character development, but read the books in order - that's where the character development is - it's about getting to know the characters over time. Took the phrase "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" to a totally new place for me.

This is the first book in the Tommy Carmellini series I have read, you don't need to know who he is to get into the story so don't be put off by the #5 in the series it stands alone and there's enough character back story to bring you up to speed. I definitely felt the beginning half of the book with the taking of the cruise liner was the best part and most intense. Towards the end with all the sneaking around, spying and military action some just felt long winded and drawn out (just my opinion). Overall though it was a good book that took a piece out of real world events and crafted a fictional story with it as a base. I know I won't be going on a cruise anytime soon though.

Man, this was bad. I finished it through sheer stubbornness rather than because I was enjoying it. In sure I've enjoyed Coonts' books on the past (albeit a long time ago) but this felt lazy and formulaic, as well as being horrifically Islamophobic. Even the research was lacking (the British PM watches the news on "his local Fox network" FFS).

This was a fun novel. Definitely an airplane read, which was how I consumed it. It was about Somali pirates who kidnap and take over a cruise ship, and how the pirates, the people on the ship, and the US government all react. I didn't see the Captain Philips movie a few years back about this topic, but it seemed similar in plot. A quick, interesting read.
