An excellent look at the series of albums that rebuilt the reputation of Johnny Cash just as they documented his physical decline.

Thomson looks at the travails of Cash's career that led him to Rick Rubin. Needless to say, the story is more complex and nuanced than the legend would suggest. Excellent interviews with those closely involved with Cash (including family members) add real depth.

It places all of the released albums in context and, more importantly, sends you back to listen again.

A very good review on the last 20 years of Cash's career. It would have been a 5 star book, however there are numerous factual errors that cause me to take a star off my rating. (Stating that Carl Perkins died in 1968 (instead of Luther Perkins) and getting the names of some songs incorrect (15 Minutes to Go instead of 25 Minutes to Go) are a few examples)

These errors could have easily been caught with a more thorough editing process and I wish this book would have been subject to it, as it is very informative and entertaining. Highly recommended despite the errors.
