Funny little monster

Not bad. It had its funny moments and it's dark moments. Looking at the world from the eyes of a feral goddess. Nice idea

Great story.

The book intrigued me when the author was nominated for one of my Best Indie Titles of 2017 awards on my author blog, and the author was nice enough to share the story with me for a review. Ryn and Naomi are very fascinating characters. Together they must fight monsters. The story had great dimension and I liked the POV. It gave a lot of essence to the story. It's one of those books you read from beginning to end, and hope that it doesn't end. Filled with twists and things that turn right upside down. Great story.

Let me start by saying that if Ryn had been a male character, I would never have even bought this book. The fact that Edgelord is not male and the story is wlw were absolutely selling points.

There is a lot to like about this book. Not my favorite things: epithet overusage. So so much. Aspects of the plot felt a little... silly? Not like Mel Brooks silly, just a little too, I dunno, B-movie, but earnest. And there was some minor fat-shaming, not more than you’ll find in a lot of things, less than a lot of things, but more than there should be really (which is more than none). I also wish that Matthews had even once used the word “bisexual.” Not as an epithet though.

Big strength: a great cast of characters, each with their own strongly defined personalities and voices. The relationships and motivations behind them as well as how they developed felt organic and heartwarming. Found families are my favorite things. And there’s a lot of room for more story to see things develop further. I’m really looking forward to see how things progress with Ryn and her new family and friends. Kessler and Cross are the perfect balance for each other and for Ryn, and of course Naomi, Denise, and Elli all have great chemistry with her and each other. There were also some pretty badass fight scenes. Ryn is a hell of an action hero. Well, maybe “hero” is a strong word.

All in all, I’m glad I read this book and I’m glad Ryn isn’t a dude. By the time I got to the last third or so I was so absorbed I had to Olympic wrestle the need for sleep into submission so I could finish it. If you think this book might be for you, it probably is.
