Liked this book. The main character was very unusual, in a goods way. I like that it is in 3rd person POV, and how the different relationships developed. I’ve never read an lgbt novel and I found the experience really enjoyable. Bit disappointed that this book came out a few years ago and there are no apparent signs of a sequel even though the book implies there will be one.

I just realized I never wrote a review for this book. Allow me to correct that oversight.

This is one of those gems I found while browsing Amazon for something to read. It was a $5 purchase at the time, and boy, did I get my money's worth. I can safely say I've read this book about 20 times now, and it never fails to entertain me.

Basically, it is a Beauty and the Beast kind of story. The book starts of with a prologue, about a girl in an unspecified region of the world who seeks out a Goddess to heal her brother who is deadly ill.
The book sucked me in from page one, which is a feat very few books manage to achieve for me these days.

I won't give away much of the story, but the Goddess we were introduced to in the prologue and the first chapters, finds herself in the modern world, albeit in an alternate reality. She has taken on the form of a 16 or 17 year old girl and it's safe to say, she has a really hard time to fit in. Part of this is due to an ancient curse, but she hates humans and the world they live in. If one didn't know any better, most would place her somewhere in the autism spectrum, which might be a reason I could really identify myself with her. Much of what she struggles with in her world, are issues for me as well.

The curse is somewhat lifted when she was brought over to an alternate United States, but once Rin is allowed to participate in the world, she gets her powers back. Rin considers herself a monster, and she does what monsters do best: she starts hunting other monsters, and we learn a bit more of other Gods, monsters and spirits.

On one of her hunts, she comes across an Asura (a spirit) that has a morbid interest in another girl, and Rin decides, for reasons that completely befuddle her, to protect this girl, Naomi. Rin finds she can't stay away from Naomi, and not only because there is a sinister plot to kill Naomi. During the book, Rin and Naomi both grow closer to each other, and both aren't sure what to do with their complicated feelings.

There are quite a few action scenes in the book, and they wouldn't be out of place in a slasher movie. Rin is incredibly violent, and does not hold back when fighting other monsters that threaten Naomi. be they spirits or human predators. She does not make any excuse, either; she is a monster in her own way, although she has a moral compass that other Gods and Spirits lack entirely.

The secondary characters are also really well written, with the focus on two detectives (one of which is a soldier who took Rin out of her original environment). In my opinion, the scene where the two meet at a scene of destruction caused by Rin, is one of the best introductions I have ever read. Here, again, the difference between the two is a strong point, one being an ex-soldier, and the other an obese and out of shape detective.

The journey That Rin makes in this confusing world of humans and their strange habits is an absolute joy to read about. But try as she might, she cannot stay away from Naomi, for reasons she only later starts to understand. Naomi isn't too sure either about her feelings for Rin, and the both of them dance around each other, until Naomi learns who, or rather, what, Rin really is.

There are a few issues with the story, but they are mainly some inconsistencies regarding Naomi's father and Rin's abilities. They are not enough to warrant less than 5 stars, though.

Although both Rin and Naomi are both 17 or 18 in this book, I have a hard time putting this in the YA category, because that isn't really Rin's real age. How old is Rin? Read the book to find out :)
