Not usual Regency romance fare. The lady is a woman of color from the West Indies, the Duke is disabled due to injuries sustained in the Napoleonic Wars but also there is a mood here that is different, a little sadder, a little bit like a Gothic novel- there are ghosts here although not actual ghosts, more hauntings by regrets and fears. I found the mood immersive and the characters memorable. The final mystery to be solved was perhaps less tightly woven than it promised to be earlier in the book but in the end, it didn't matter.

DNF. Tried, made it halfway. Couldn’t handle the POV first to third person switches or the breastfeeding hyperfixation (and I love breastfeeding but omg)
Really bummed because this was set up to be a rare inclusionary historical romance (MMC is amputee and FMC is from West Indies) but the writing was jarring, the characters had no discernible chemistry and their choices just didn’t make sense??

The book was all over the place, characters weren’t interesting or convincing. It was a SLOG.
