A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley

4.0

Not usual Regency romance fare. The lady is a woman of color from the West Indies, the Duke is disabled due to injuries sustained in the Napoleonic Wars but also there is a mood here that is different, a little sadder, a little bit like a Gothic novel- there are ghosts here although not actual ghosts, more hauntings by regrets and fears. I found the mood immersive and the characters memorable. The final mystery to be solved was perhaps less tightly woven than it promised to be earlier in the book but in the end, it didn't matter.
