A fun little book, I don’t have much to say about though. Would love to read it physically one day.

“The world that exists behind a story is never fully known, not even to the author. That is what I had in mind as I created this. I hope you have enjoyed reading this memento of a story that has ended.”
— Hiromi Kawakami

Not reading a book’s description sometimes pays off. I hadn’t realized this was a companion to Strange Weather in Tokyo — it felt like stumbling upon a hidden gem in my own bookshelf. A short and charming story weaving Japanese folklore that I enjoyed more than the main novel.

A fun, bite sized read that kept me entertained for the short amount of time that I spent with it. I would have enjoyed it to be a bit longer and more expanded upon, but maybe that's what strange weather in tokyo is for.

I think I was probably more likely to get into Hiromi Kawakami’s writing through her novels, but I only had enough of an attention span for this novella 🫠
(I’ve also seen a review that said read this as a companion to Strange Weather in Tokyo, oops! 😂)

Fun and light, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the tengu as less of a deity and more of a human figure.

3.5 out of 5 stars for me, thank you ✨

now this is a take but given the high school? setting, maybe im biased to say that i liked this more. i just have to search how the japanese folklore creatures looked like but the tengus obviously respond to her behavior. wish we could explore the story of more because this has a potential.

(read in companion to strange weather in tokyo.)
